Promotion of Sexual Reproductive Health & Rights
Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) remains a crucial thematic area for the organisation. WAG is determined to implement strategies and programmes that promote access to quality and comprehensive SRHR information and services

At community level, WAG engages in awareness campaigns and training in order to empower communities with knowledge on SRHR. It also creates platforms for men and women to discuss initiatives and solutions that promote and ensure the enjoyment of sexual and reproductive health rights and access to quality health care. WAG unpacks issues of cultural practices that hinder women from asserting their SRHR.

At national level, the focus is on lobbying and advocacy for access to quality and affordable health services. WAG currently sits in the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM), the highest decision making authority in Global Fund processes at country level where it has been amplifying women’s issues in HIV programming in Zimbabwe. In addition, WAG is a member of the Safe Abortion Coalition Zimbabwe, which is advocating for the review of Zimbabwe’s Termination of Pregnancy Act (1977).

Best Practices

WAG is the SAFE ENGAGE (Strengthening Evidence Based Advocacy for improved access to safe abortion in Zimbabwe) Taskforce lead made up of diverse experts in Zimbabwe who came up with a multi-media tool, Breaking the Silence to influence abortion advocacy. The national taskforce has been using the tool to engage with policy makers including the media in abortion work. Having the responsibility to lead a national taskforce with Ministry of Health and Child Care since 2017 has been a unique role in the abortion work in Zimbabwe.
